The Story
(noun, a mythical bird said by ancient writers to breed in a nest floating at sea at the winter solstice, charming the wind and waves into calm)
The Halcyon from Demerara was wrecked and found abandoned on November 23, 1841, with no one on board and both masts and other equipment, rigging, and ropes gone. Sailors who discovered her said it appeared that the ship had been boarded before, had a flush deck, with painted ports; it didn’t appear to the sailors to have been in that state very long.
A ship’s boat was found a week later; empty. That same day the bodies of nine seamen came ashore, supposed to be the crew of the wrecked vessel, who had been forced to take their chances in the lifeboat.
